Four Star Home Performance Sign Up for a Home Energy Audit

Full Residential Energy Audits
Includes blower door test, thermal imaging, combustible/gas appliance inspection (furnace, hot water heater, oven), visual inspection of house exterior, crawl spaces, basements, attics, insulation, and all rooms, carbon monoxide testing, natural gas leak testing, inspection of windows and doors. An audit also includes a customized report for your home with tailor-made recommendations to save money on your energy bills.

Blower Door Test
A blower door is a powerful fan that mounts into the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings. The auditors may use a smoke pencil to detect air leaks. These tests determine the air infiltration rate of a building.

Thermal Imaging
Your Four Star Technician will use a specialized and highly senstive thermal imaging camera to detect and report temperature variations and air leaks.

Air Sealing
Air leakage, or infiltration, occurs when outside air enters a house uncontrollably through cracks and openings. Your Four Star Technician will properly air seal these cracks and openings which can result in significantly reduced heating and cooling costs, improved building durability, and a healthier indoor environment.

You need insulation in your home to provide resistance to heat flow. The more heat flow resistance your insulation provides, the lower your heating and cooling costs. Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. In the winter, this heat flow moves directly from all heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, basements, and even to the outdoors. Heat flow can also move indirectly through interior ceilings, walls, and floors—wherever there is a difference in temperature. During the cooling season, heat flows from the outdoors to the interior of a house. To maintain comfort, the heat lost in the winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat gained in the summer must be removed by your cooling system. Properly insulating your home will decrease this heat flow by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat.

Duct Sealing
The air ducts in your home will be made airtight to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system and lower your utility bills. On average, more than 20% of the air in your home that moves through the duct system will be lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. That results in higher utility bills and uncomfortable temperatures in your home. Even if your heating and cooling system is brand new, if your duct system isn't properly installed and sealed you will lose maximum efficiency.

Attic Door Sealing
The hatch to your attic can be a major source of energy loss and air leakage. Weatherization experts agree that it is vitally important to reduce air leakage to your attic. Air leakage takes heat and moisture with it, wasting energy and resulting in serious moisture problems. Your Four Star Technician will assess your attic and attic entrance to determine the most effective way to insulate and seal your attic.
